Fort Frederica
In 1736, General James Oglethorpe established Fort Frederica on the western coast of St. Simons Island. The fort was strategically located to defend the southern border of the British Colonies from the Spanish in Florida. But before we go into the history of the Fort, we need to take a broader approach: The History of Georgia.
Waycross Colony
In the 1890s, two rows of cottages were erected just west of the St. Simons Lighthouse. This area was called the “Waycross Colony” because almost all of the cottage’s owners were from Waycross, Georgia, located 65 miles inland. These cottages were summer vacation homes, and most were without heating, electricity, or plumbing.
