The Ritz Theatre
The Ritz Theatre, originally the Grand Opera House, was built in 1899, and housed the Grand Opera House, retail stores, and the Brunswick and Birmingham Railroad. After a large hurricane destroyed the L’Arioso Opera House, plans to build a replacement opera house were made, and the Grand Opera House was born. The three-story tall building was built in the Victorian style, and featured intricate brick and stone work.

Old City Hall
Old City Hall sits at the corner of Newcastle and Mansfield Street, and has seen the test of time. Alfred Eichburg, out of Savannah, designed the building, which took three years to build with a total cost of $33,000. The building began construction in 1886 and was completed in 1889, and a clock/bell tower was added in 1893.

Glynn County Courthouse

The City of Brunswick purchased the platt of land in 1905 for the price of $1.00, and on December 27, 1906, construction began. The architect for the job was Charles Alling Gifford of Gifford & Bates Firm in New York.

Glynn Ice Company
Founded in 1903 by R.C. Baumgartner, the Glynn Ice Company was a crucial part of the community. Long before refrigerators existed, iceboxes were used to keep food and provisions cold, and the Glynn Ice Company provided this ice. During the companies early years, horse and buggy was used to transport ice from colder climates. As technology and populations grew, so did the Ice Company. In 1907, Glynn Ice Company expanded to larger headquarters located on the north end of Newcastle Street. Here, nearly 75 tons of ice could be held and produced a day.

The Dunwody Building
The original two-story wooden structure was purchased by Colonel Henry Franklin “Harry” Dunwody in 1902, hence the building’s name. Dunwody was a two-term Mayor of Brunswick, as well as a prominent local lawyer. After purchasing the building, he moved his office to the second floor, while Butt’s Drug Store was featured on the lower level. Dunwody’s purchase also included a smaller one-story structure to the building’s right.

Spencer House
Built in 1898, The Spencer House was one of six speculative or ‘spec’ houses at the corner of Union Street and Dartmouth Street. Spec houses had architectural plans from books with various options.

The Kress Building
The Kress Building has taken on many architectural styles throughout its 113 years. While few pictures of the original Kress Building exist, the best guess is that the style was Romanesque Revival…
